We Offer Professional Editing Services
Most importantly, we offer professional editing and proofing—in fact, we insist on it. We won't publish a book that hasn't been professionally edited and proofed (and reproofed!) A poorly edited book reflects poorly on the author. It looks amateurish, and it makes the author look amateurish as well. We won't stand for that. We make sure the book is as perfect as humanly possible. There is nothing worse than getting your first box of books, opening it with high expectations, and having your joy suddenly dashed when you see numerous typos, bad grammar, bad formatting, widows and orphans, and other problems. Our reputation depends on your reputation. This idea seems obvious, but it's extremely rare in the subsidy publishing business.
We regularly receive books from authors who are unhappy with work done by other subsidy publishers. These books are poorly formatted and contain numerous errors. Their authors tell me they thought they had paid for professional editing and formatting. Sadly, they were taken in by cheap prices and flashy Web sites. In the end, they paid much more than originally advertised and had only substandard books to show for it.
Book publishing done right requires a certain minimum investment. There are fees for your ISBN, copyright, digital file setup with the printer, catalogue listing, proofs, sample copies, shipping, bookkeeping, etc..
There are several key people involved in the publishing of your book, and each one is crucial to your having a book of the same professional quality that any major publisher would produce. Each of these important specialists must be well trained in the standards of modern book production and should be paid a fair wage for his or her work: editor, layout and cover designer, proofer, project manager, and administrative personnel.
At Wisdom House Books, we only work with authors who understand that our standards are high and that we won't put our name on a book unless these standards are met.
